Moon Jellyfish Necklace
This jellyfish necklace is made of 925 Sterling Silver and Larimar. The design resembles the moon jellyfishes of the genus Aurelia.
These jellyfishes are translucent, which means you can easily see their gonads. They don’t have a real sense of location, which is why they rather drift than actively swim. They can only sense if they are inverted because of crystal-type structures that give them a sense of orientation. This means, if you ever swim into a jellyfish, don’t think it will attack you, it can’t!
To eat, it uses its tentacles to collect other medusae, plankton, and mollusks, bringing them into its body for digestion. They are closely related to corals because they both have trigger cells called cnidocytes (cells that release a protein that stings). These cells only trigger by contact and can sometimes be lethal, but gladly, not in the species found in Costa Rica.
By purchasing the moon jellyfish necklace, you support the marine conservation efforts carried out in Punta Descartes by Equipo Tora Carey. If you ever want to visit the site and learn more about the project, make sure to contact us or Equipo Tora Carey and schedule your visit, where you can help with the ray monitoring project, environmental education or sea turtle monitoring as well, and overall, help us protect what we love!
