Description
This billfish necklace is made of 925 Sterling Silver. The design is inspired by the pacific blue marlin (Makaira nigricans).
The Pacific Blue Marlin is a large and powerful, migratory species, which hunts near the surface in offshore waters and therefore is a popular catch in the Sport Fishing industry.
With its sword-like jaw, it corrals, injures, and stuns small to medium-sized fish in rapid movements, often leaping high out of the water when chasing its prey. It occurs in Costa Rica year-round, but prefers the warmer ocean temperatures from September to January, being considered as a true Tropical Billfish.
Females are 3 to 4 times larger than males, reaching up to 5m in length, and can live up to 27 years. The Blue Marlin, just like other billfishes and sharks, are apex predators, meaning that that as adults, they don’t have any natural predators, except for humans.
Apex predators are essential to the maintenance of marine ecosystems and the combination of sport fishing and targeted industrial fishing has depleted their populations to unhealthy levels, as more fish is extracted than they can reproduce.
With the purchase of this pendant, you directly contribute to the creation and maintenance of alternative employments in the coastal fishing village of El Jobo that prove conservation to be more profitable than extraction
By purchasing this wild billfish necklace, you can choose to support any of Equipo Tora Carey’s conservation projects, such as ray monitoring, sea turtle conservation or environmental education, and hopefully, with your help, the establishment of new projects! Also, if you ever want to visit the site and learn more about the projects, make sure to contact us or Equipo Tora Carey and schedule your visit!
