Description

This sea turtle necklace is made of 925 Sterling Silver and Larimar or ‘Stefilia’s Stone’. This design resembles an adult Black Turtle like the ones nesting and foraging in Costa Rica’s North Pacific coastline.

The Black Turtle (Chelonia mydas) is only known by this name in the Eastern Pacific from Mexico to Chile, because their populations here are distinctively dark in color, smaller in size, and much more omnivorous (feeding on both algae and animal protein) compared to their sister populations in the rest of the world.

Their principal nesting beaches are located in Mexico, the Galapagos Islands, and in the North Pacific of Costa Rica. Like other sea turtle species, Black Turtles are highly migratory and can swim thousands of km when moving from their feeding grounds to their nesting beaches, where they once were born.

For instance, in Matapalito Bay, a developing and foraging ground close to Punta Descartes monitored by Equipo Tora Carey, many turtles have been recaptured that were originally tagged in the Galapagos Islands and Mexico. Black turtles are probably the slowest growing individuals, reaching sexual maturity as late as 45 years of age. This fact and the continuous threats of unsustainable coastal development challenges our efforts to conserve these particular populations.

By purchasing this sea turtle necklace, you can choose to support sea turtle conservation and help Equipo Tora Carey’s conservation efforts on Black Turtles. Also, if you ever want to visit the site and learn more about the project, make sure to contact us or Equipo Tora Carey and schedule your visit!
