Humpback Whale Calf Necklace

$16.00

This 925 Sterling Silver necklace resembles a Humpback Whale calf (Megaptera novaeangliae). It represents the bond that exists between a mother and her offspring, as it is seen in this species that visits our coastlines to raise her calves, swimming closely together for over a year, while they grow enough to migrate back to the poles.

Description

This humpback whale calf necklace design is made of 925 Sterling Silver. It stands for the excitement that we live every year in Costa Rica when humpbacks visit us all around the coastline ?!

After 12 months of gestation, Humpback Whale calves (Megaptera novaeangliae) are born at a size of up to 6m in length, roughly the size of their mother’s head. They will nurse from their mothers’ milk for up to 1 year, drinking as much as 600 liters of milk per day!

Mother and calf maintain a close association during the lactation period, strengthened by constant touching and “whispering”, or low-frequency whale songs that help to avoid the attraction of killer whales. Although most calves separate from their mothers after one year, many records show longer associations, where mothers with newborns are accompanied by their older offsprings.

During whale watching tours conducted with our partners at Noa Noa Surfari and Surfari Del Mar, we encourage visitors to take photos of the calves and mothers fins to track our humpback whales through photo-identification records.

By purchasing this humpback whale calf necklace, you can choose to support any of Equipo Tora Carey’s conservation projects, and as we grow, hopefully, the official introduction of a new project on whale monitoring. Also, if you ever want to visit the site and learn more about the projects, make sure to contact us or Equipo Tora Carey and schedule your visit!
