The Mystical Turtle ring represents our uncommon aggregation of foraging Green Turtles in Matapalito Bay, which is a mystical place itself. Only here can we find large numbers of individuals that have their natal origin in the Central Pacific islands of American Samoa and French Polynesia and even further at the Indopacific island chains, more than 10,000km away.

Their appearance at Eastern Pacific foraging grounds is likely mediated by transpacific currents, that runs north of the Equator and are especially strong during La Niña years. Indo-Pacific green turtles are known as “sympatric” to our endemic Black Turtle populations, as they congregate but don’t reproduce among themselves.

This might be explained by their differential developmental stages, as the Indo-Pacific greens only remain here as juveniles and must migrate back across the Pacific to reproduce.
